Gabriele was born in Basel, Switzerland, and did his Bachelor’s in Biology at the University of Zurich. At the beginning of 2012 he joined the lab of Lucas Pelkmans as a fasttrack student. During his Master’s thesis he worked on population dependent effects in endocytosis and the feedback mechanisms shaping the cell’s microenvironment and its cellular state. He then continued for a Ph.D. thesis in the lab, in which he developed Cycler, a method to derive cell cycle trajectories from fixed cell populations, 4i (iterative indirect immunofluorescence imaging), which achieves >40-plex protein state imaging across multiple spatial scales, and a single pixel-based machine learning approach to comprehensively quantify and statistically compare the spatial organization of multiplexed signals. Currently, Gabriele is an embedded bio-entrepreneur with the aim to spin out a start-up company from the lab based on his ground-breaking discoveries.
